Disgusting shopping carts

Are shopping carts really that disgusting?

If you think about what lurks on a shopping cart handle – invisible to our eyes – then yes.

"Often there are more germs on a shopping cart than on a public toilet," explains Reinier Mutters, former head of hospital hygiene at the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene at Phillips University Marburg.

For the program "Markt," WDR took samples from shopping cart handles at various supermarkets. The result: More germs were found on the handles than on the seat of a public toilet. Half of the samples contained as many bacteria as are found under a shoe sole. In some cases, mold and fecal bacteria were even detected. Although these germs are generally harmless to healthy people, the idea remains disgusting.

Shopping cart handles and door handles are a welcome "spot" for every virus, bacteria, and germ. You can't tell by looking at them. After all, they look clean from the outside.

A high bacterial load is generally considered a risk for infections by certain microorganisms. In one supermarket, one out of ten samples was contaminated. In the worst case of our sample, even seven out of ten samples were affected - danger lurks everywhere. And this is precisely in the supermarket, where pathogens are transferred to food at lightning speed."

We are surrounded by germs and bacteria, why should we worry about shopping cart handles?

Our bodies are surrounded by germs and bacteria. But in our fast-paced times, viruses, germs, and bacteria have become more adaptable and resistant. Our love of travel means that viruses, bacteria, and germs spread faster around the world.
As long as our immune system is intact, our body usually copes with them without problems. If we do get sick, it's usually in a milder form. However, if the immune system is weakened by stress, diets, and existing illnesses, cold viruses, noroviruses (vomiting and diarrhea), or a urinary tract infection can severely affect the body.

Here we are always talking about healthy adults, now let's imagine what this situation looks like for toddlers. Unlike toddlers, we don't smear our wet hands along the shopping cart handle and we don't lick the shopping carts either...

With norbärt - the protective cover, you have protection in no time at all. The protective cover covers the entire front area of the shopping cart and thus also the handle and the plug connections. An additional advantage is that it also protects against disinfectants. Because at least since Corona, shopping carts have been disinfected again and again, but the disinfectant is not intended for mucous membranes either.
